The Department of Water Conservancy has always adhered to the idea of running a research university and actively carried out high-level scientific research. The research achievements have successively won 3 national natural science awards, more than 20 national scientific and technological progress awards, and nearly 100 first and second prizes of provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements. Four doctoral dissertations were rated as national excellent doctoral dissertations. The research team with young and middle-aged teachers as the main body was selected as the outstanding innovation group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The Ministry of Water Resources also pays special attention to the research work closely integrated with the construction of major national water conservancy projects. Entrusted by Premier Zhou Enlai to design Miyun Reservoir, the largest water conservancy project in North China at that time, he has participated in the key technology research of almost all major water conservancy and hydropower projects in China, including the Three Gorges Project, the world's largest water conservancy project, and the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, the world's largest water diversion project. In recent ten years, according to the huge demand for water problems in the new period of social development in China, the research on water disasters, water resources, water environment, water ecology and water management has been strengthened and fruitful research results have been achieved. The Ministry of Water Resources also attaches great importance to international exchanges and maintains long-term cooperation and exchanges with universities and scientific research institutions in the United States, Canada, Russia, Britain, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
