Beijing subway planning began in 1953, construction began in 1965, and the earliest line was completed in 1969. It is the first subway system in Greater China.

In the 1950s, Mao Zedong had an insight into the importance of underground railways, and advocated that Beijing should build urban underground railways from the perspective of war preparedness and civilian use, and pointed out that "not only Beijing must build urban underground railways, but many big cities must also build them." In response to this call, preparations for the construction of a subway in Beijing began.

In 1965, the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council decided to build the Beijing Subway.

On February 4, Mao Zedong personally reviewed the Beijing subway construction plan and determined the eight-character policy of "meticulous design and careful construction" in his instructions.

On July 1, the first phase of the Beijing Subway project started. Many national leaders, including Zhu De and Deng Xiaoping, as well as Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
