Introduction to the National Public Nutrition Improvement Project

The National Public Nutrition Improvement Project is referred to as the National RETA project, and its fundamental purpose is to improve the nutritional status of the Chinese public. In October 1995, the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Children's Fund met with relevant responsible comrades from eight ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Health and the State Planning Commission in Beijing to discuss the implementation of regional technical assistance projects to improve nutritional status in China and other Asian countries (referred to as We exchanged views on the necessity and feasibility of RETA) and received unanimous support from the participants. In 1995, the National Public Nutrition Improvement Project, composed of relevant units of the State Planning Commission and the Ministry of Health, was established and began work. From 1995 to 1997, the research on "Strategy for Reducing Child Malnutrition" was launched. The project investigates the nutritional status of Chinese children and analyzes the main causes of child malnutrition; studies the impact of the Chinese government's macroeconomic policies on the nutritional status of children and the entire population; summarizes the Chinese government's nutrition work since the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially the two decades of reform and opening up, and summarizes experiences and shortcomings ; Propose policy recommendations for improving early childhood nutrition in my country in the next ten years. The third phase of the project was launched in 2000. It identified food fortification as the entry point for comprehensively improving the nutritional status of the public in my country, selected and determined fortification carriers and nutrient fortification formulas suitable for China's national conditions, and organized targeted research on food fortification policies and regulations. And promote its gradual improvement; conduct experiments on technical equipment for adding different carrier nutrients; research and formulate the "National Nutrition Improvement Ten-Year Investment Plan", etc. The achievements achieved by the RETA China project team have attracted the attention and high praise of several other countries in the RETA project.
