in my experience, if the patent is closely related to your project, you can write it in the list of technologies and indicate that it needs to be approved. If the connection is not very close, it doesn't matter much if you don't write. Self-study mainly focuses on solving scientific problems, and the results tend to take a fancy to high-level papers.
