Nanjing University of Science and Technology's specialty majors include engineering, chemistry, materials science, and computer science. As of April 2019, the school's four disciplines of engineering, chemistry, materials science, and computer science have entered the top 1% of the world's ESI international subject fields.

The school was formed from the Military Engineering College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (hereinafter referred to as "Harbin Military Engineering") founded in 1953. It has gone through development stages such as Artillery Engineering College, East China College of Engineering, and East China College of Technology. In 1993, it was renamed Nanjing University of Science and Technology.
