China Pharmaceutical University was founded in 1936, formerly known as the National College of Pharmacy (four-year undergraduate program). It is the first pharmaceutical institution of higher learning founded by the state in China.

It moved to Hankou in 1937, Chongqing in 1938, and Nanjing in 1946.

In 1950, it was renamed East China Pharmaceutical College.
