Southern University of Science and Technology, referred to as "Southern University of Science and Technology", is a national higher education comprehensive reform pilot school. It is a full-time public higher education institution led and managed by Guangdong Province. It is an innovative university founded by Shenzhen City.

In March 2011, the SUSTech Education Reform Experimental Class started. In April 2012, the Ministry of Education agreed to establish Southern University of Science and Technology and gave the school the goal of exploring a modern university system with Chinese characteristics and exploring innovative talent training models.

In May 2018, Southern University of Science and Technology was approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit, becoming the fastest university in China to obtain a doctoral degree.

As of May 2018, SUSTech has contracted to introduce more than 600 teachers. Among the nearly 300 teaching and research teachers, there are 24 academicians (12 full-time academicians), 6 experts from the "Ten Thousand People Plan", and 18 "" from the Ministry of Education.

There are 19 recipients of the “National Natural Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth Fund” and 5 recipients of the “National Science Fund for Outstanding Youth”.

More than 90% of teachers in the teaching and research series have overseas work experience, and more than 60% have experience working or studying in the top 100 universities in the world.

The school has 14 departments and 26 research centers.

There are 26 undergraduate majors, 6 first-level discipline master’s degree authorization points, 1 engineering master’s professional degree authorization point, and 4 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points.
