School history: The school was founded in 1956, formerly known as Inner Mongolia Medical College. It was one of the earliest higher medical schools established in minority areas in New China. It was affiliated to the Ministry of Health at the time and was placed under the management of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 1958.

In March 2012, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Inner Mongolia Medical University.

As of March 2021, the school has three teaching campuses, Jinshan Campus, Xinhua Campus, and Xilin Campus, with a total area of ??1,231,808 square meters and a total construction area of ??525,726 square meters, of which the teaching and administrative space is 244,219 square meters.
