From September 1986 to September 1987, he was invited by the Henry Luce Foundation in the United States to do visiting research at the East Asian Research Center of Stanford University. In November, he was invited by the New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to visit and give a lecture as a "Mingyu Scholar".
