Xinyang Normal University is located in Xinyang City, a famous historical and cultural city in southern Henan. It is one of the two key undergraduate normal colleges in Henan Province. In 2007, it was rated as an excellent school in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2009 and 2011.

It has been named a "National Civilized Unit" by the Central Civilization Committee twice in a row, and was once praised as the "Cradle of Teachers" by Mr. Fei Xiaotong, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, social activist and educator.

The school was founded in 1975, formerly known as Kaifeng Normal College (now Henan University) Xinyang Branch.

In 1978, it was approved by the State Council as an undergraduate institution and changed to its current name. The following year, it became the first batch of bachelor's degree authorized units.

In 1998, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree authorizing unit. In 2004, it was authorized to confer master's degrees to those with equivalent academic qualifications. In 2008, it was authorized to confer professional master's degrees in education. In 2010, it was authorized to confer professional master's degrees in translation and engineering.

Xinyang borders Wuhan to the south and Zhengzhou to the north. Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway, Ningxi Railway, National Highways 106, 107, 312 and Beijing-Zhuhai, Shanghai-Shaanxi and Daguang Expressways all intersect here.

An important transportation hub between East and West, it has a beautiful urban environment and pleasant climate. It is the only city in the country that has been selected as one of the "Top Ten Livable Cities in China" for six consecutive years.

The school is located at the northern foot of Xian Mountain and on the shore of Shanshui River. It faces Nanwan Lake, the "Pearl of Changhuai River", to the west, and Jigong Mountain, the "Yunzhong Park", to the south. The scenery is beautiful and pleasant; the campus is lined with trees, birds are singing and flowers are fragrant, and the scenery is beautiful all year round.
