On September 8, because the original site of the technical school, the "People's Hall", was listed as a dangerous building, the municipal government decided to merge the municipal technical school with the municipal trade union vocational school. In October, the executive meeting of the Zhongshan Municipal Party Committee decided to expand the technical school, allocate an additional 34 acres of land, and invest 20 million to build a 14,000 square meter training building.

On October 26, the school was upgraded to a deputy department-level unit directly under the Labor and Social Security Bureau.

In November, Xu Rongdong, deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Labor and Social Security, led the provincial CPPCC leaders to inspect the school.

On January 1, 2002, a cooperative education contract was signed with Hubei Jianghan Oilfield Advanced Technical School.

On July 25, the school was confirmed by the provincial government as a provincial key technical school.
