For Professor Wang Xibin himself, his not-so-smooth road to scientific research is not a "hard journey", but the idea only comes from his family, friends and people who walk on the road of scientific research and then retreat. Faced with many difficulties, he just smiled and persisted. This spirit has been with him until today, and indicates future success. The Advanced Processing Technology Laboratory of Beijing Institute of Technology, where Professor Wang Xibin is located, was formerly the cutting technology laboratory and has a fine tradition. The older generation of scholars, represented by Yu Qixun, Qiu Qiyuan and Yang, have made outstanding contributions to the cutting technology of difficult-to-machine military materials in China and enjoyed a high reputation at home and abroad. However, in the middle and late 1990s, with the retirement of a group of old teachers and the influence of social environment, middle-aged teachers and young graduate students did not want to stay in colleges and universities to study metal cutting technology, but chose to work in the society. Research laboratories are facing the dilemma of talent shortage. At that time, department leaders and retired professors were generally worried about how long the banner could last. At this time, Wang Xibin, who had just left Huazhong University of Science and Technology as a postdoctoral fellow to work in Beijing Institute of Technology, was appointed as the director of the research office, and embarked on a arduous entrepreneurial journey.

Wang Xibin first visited some military units. Through investigation, he learned that metal cutting is still an important means in the development and production of high-tech engineering weapons and equipment, but there are widespread problems such as low processing efficiency and high processing cost, which restrict the improvement of economic benefits. In view of this situation, combined with the existing research foundation in the laboratory and the research focus of high-speed cutting technology in the advanced manufacturing field at home and abroad, Wang Xibin proposed a new research field of high-speed cutting technology for military difficult-to-machine materials, which was funded by the higher authorities. After five years of research, the research team has broken through key technologies such as high-efficiency cutting technology and tool system, and successfully applied them to many military units such as weapons and aerospace, and achieved good social and economic benefits. In 2006, he won the first prize of weapon science and technology and the third prize of national defense science and technology. While continuing to maintain the leading position in the processing technology of military difficult-to-machine materials in China, Wang Xibin firmly grasped the frontier of advanced processing technology and initiated two new disciplines of green manufacturing and micro-manufacturing at Beijing Institute of Technology.

Green manufacturing is one of the research hotspots at home and abroad. Similar research in this field mainly focuses on typical civil electromechanical products such as air conditioners, refrigerators, automobile engines and printed circuit boards, while the research and application in national defense science and technology industry is almost blank. Limited by historical conditions and various factors, military production does not pay attention to social cost, ecological cost and natural resource consumption, which not only leads to serious resource and energy consumption, but also has a serious impact on the economic construction, ecological environment and workers' health of enterprises. In view of this situation, Wang Xibin took the lead in proposing the research, popularization and application of green manufacturing technology in national defense science and technology industry. Supported by the National Defense Science and Technology Key Laboratory Fund and the equipment pre-research project, he organized a research group to study the basic manufacturing technology involved in the green production process of continuous petrochemical products and discrete mechanical products. Through the efforts of the research group, the above two research results have greatly changed the current situation of poor environmental friendliness in the development and production of weapons and equipment.

Micromachining is an important part of extreme manufacturing technology and another strategic growth point of advanced machining technology. Similar research at home and abroad mostly adopts special process methods such as etching and strong field machining, and the processing system is complex and the processing technology is difficult to master. Through investigation, Wang Xibin learned that in order to meet the new functional requirements, parts and structures need to be miniaturized in many cases, but the corresponding processing technologies and methods are far behind. Therefore, Wang Xibin proposed to realize the miniaturization of metal cutting technology through the design and application of special tool system on the basis of existing metal cutting. Through the efforts of the Tenth Five-Year Plan, our research group has developed a milling center for mini-cars, and obtained a national patent, which meets the processing requirements of micro-parts. Practice shows that this idea is in line with the specific situation of various military enterprises and is a micro-machining method with great popularization and application prospects. The research results have been highly valued by the higher authorities and listed as one of the key development fields of national defense science, technology and industry during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period. While doing his own scientific research well, Wang Xibin also served as the deputy director of scientific research in his department and actively organized all teachers to carry out scientific research. At that time, a considerable number of teachers focused on teaching and were unwilling or did not know how to engage in scientific research. Therefore, Wang Xibin invested a lot of energy, organized everyone to declare various scientific research projects, and jointly developed technologies with enterprises. With the joint efforts of Wang Xibin and teachers from all departments, the scientific research scale of manufacturing department has rapidly reached the average annual100000 yuan in the Tenth Five-Year Plan period from the average annual100000 yuan in the Ninth Five-Year Plan period, achieving a leap-forward development.

Talking about the experience of engaging in scientific research, Professor Wang Xibin said with deep feelings: "Only starting from the actual needs of enterprises, especially military enterprises, can we find new technological growth points; Only by facing difficulties and pioneering and innovating can we make a breakthrough in academics and technology; Only by strengthening the promotion and transformation of basic achievements can technological achievements be used.
