School history: Lanzhou University was founded in 1909. Its predecessor was the Gansu School of Law and Politics established during the New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1928, it was expanded to Lanzhou Sun Yat-sen University; in 1946, it was named National Lanzhou University.

In 1952, it was identified as one of the fourteen comprehensive universities in the country; graduate education began in 1954; in 2001, the Ministry of Education and the Gansu Provincial Government signed a provincial and ministerial key university construction agreement.

In the course of more than 110 years of running a school, the school has stayed in the west and strived for the country. It has embarked on the path of establishing a world-class university in areas where the economy is yet to be developed. It has created "eight academicians in one subject" in chemistry and "three generations of teachers and students in earth science".
