The story of Xu Xiujuan

In October p>1964, Xu Xiujuan was born in a family of cranes in Zhalongtun, Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province. Her father is a crane protection engineer in Zhalong Nature Reserve, and her mother has raised cranes in Zhalong Nature Reserve for 1 years. When Xu Xiujuan was a child, he often helped his parents feed the little cranes, and he fell in love with the red-crowned cranes imperceptibly.

In p>1981, due to the closure of the local middle school and high school, 17-year-old Xu Xiujuan went to Zhalong Nature Reserve to raise cranes with her father, becoming the first crane girl in China. She soon mastered the whole set of techniques for raising, grazing, breeding, hatching and brooding rare birds such as red-crowned cranes, white-naped cranes and declining-feather cranes, and the survival rate of her young cranes reached 1%. Her outstanding work was praised by Dr. Archie Polder, President of the International Crane Foundation.

in March p>1985, Xu Xiujuan went to the wildlife department of Northeast Forestry University for further study at his own expense. Although the school reduced her tuition fee by half in consideration of her practical difficulties, she still couldn't afford a meal of 6 cents a day, and she kept studying hard with steamed bread and pickles every day. In the second semester, because she couldn't pay the tuition fee, her life was unsustainable. She once carried her teachers and classmates and donated blood several times in exchange for some money to maintain her studies. Later, she decided to compress her two-year studies into one and a half years. After hard work, 1 of the 11 subjects in the final exam scored "excellent" or above 85 points. During this period, she also taught herself English. It was after her death that people found out in her diary written in English that she exchanged blood for money.

In p>1986, Xu Xiujuan went to Yancheng Nature Reserve in Jiangsu Province, the wintering place where red-crowned cranes migrated, and took three crane eggs with him. This is a gift from Xiujuan to Yancheng Nature Reserve. Three crane eggs are three future cranes for her. Xu Xiujuan took care of the three crane eggs with an artificial leather bag, a warm water bag, half a catty of absorbent cotton and a thermometer. Eggs are packed in artificial leather bags, and if the temperature and humidity change slightly, the crane will not hatch. If the boiling water is cut off on the train, she has to put the crane eggs in her arms, because the human body temperature is about 37 degrees. In this way, the train and the car all the way, and the young crane finally broke out of its shell. The three little cranes are called Longlong, Dandan and Sasha by Xiujuan respectively.

No one knows what kind of care has been paid to those three crane eggs Xiujuan; But people know that in the most advanced incubators imported from the United States, small cranes have also died.

After 83 days and nights of careful care, three little cranes finally spread their wings and flew into the blue sky.

Xu Xiujuan loves these creatures deeply, and cranes have become an inseparable part of her life.

In June p>1987, Xu Xiujuan rushed to Yancheng from home, accompanied by two swans brought from Inner Mongolia. She called them Dawn and Mu Ren. When she got off the train, she was greeted by the news of Dandan's death. This is a crane that she loves most. There is something wrong with Danny's leg. He walks like a jump. When Xiujuan took it to catch insects in the wild, it was very close to Xiujuan.

No one knows how many tears Xiujuan shed in that situation.

Because Dawn was ill, Xiujuan kept it in the dormitory for 8 days. Dawn recovered, but she fell ill. Before she recovered from her illness, she experienced another blow. She never expected that Longlong would vomit blood and die during the injection.

Xiujuan wailed bitterly. She said in her diary: I've never cried like this in front of anyone. Dandan went, and so did Longlong. Poor Sasha turned and ran away in fear. I couldn't calm down.

After Dawn recovered, she bathed and played with Mu Ren in the Duihui River. Because she had so much fun, the two swans forgot to go home. Xiujuan looked for them for two days and two nights. On September 16th, Xiujuan was found in the Duihu River. Her body curled up, as if she was still guilty of losing the swan and blaming herself for the deaths of Dandan and Longlong.

On September 18th, White Swan Dawn and Mu Ren flew back, but they could never see Sister Xiujuan who saved their lives again. They saw more than 1 people get together and hold a ceremony. That day, there was a total solar eclipse in the sky.

Xu Xiujuan was only 22 when he died.
