The name "Nankai" originally refers to the open space south of the west gate of the old city, which is now the southwest area where Nanma Road and Nanmenwai Street intersect.
During the Ming Dynasty, there were Shui Bo and reeds in this area. "Nanyuan Chai Ying", one of the eight scenic spots in Tianjin in the Ming Dynasty, refers to this place. In the early years of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty, there were troops stationed here to reclaim land and cultivate seeds. During the reign of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, depressions were opened up as rice fields. "Dingnan Hefeng" is a true description. After the wall was demolished in the Qing Dynasty 190 1, residents gradually moved south, and this area gradually developed into an urban area, which people still used to call "Nankai".
Nankai District is a well-known cultural and educational district in Tianjin. Nankai University, Tianjin University and other 16 institutions of higher learning, among which college students account for more than half of the total number of college students in Tianjin.

Nankai University was founded by Yen Hsiu (1860- 1929) and Zhang Boling (1876- 195 1) in 19 19. When Nankai University was founded, it set up three subjects, namely, arts, science and business, and enrolled 96 students. Zhou Enlai is the first liberal arts student (student number 62).
Nankai University, as an early private university, basically relied on fund groups and private donations, except for a little government subsidies, tuition fees and school income. Based on the principle of "quality is not expensive, quality is not heavy" and limited investment, the school has always been very small. 1937 has only 429 students, but the teaching staff is strong.
