China Everbright Group Co., Ltd. (referred to as Everbright Group in Chinese) was initiated and established by the Ministry of Finance and Central Huijin Company. It is a state-owned enterprise managed by the central government.

It was founded in Hong Kong in May 1983 and officially opened on August 18 of the same year.

When the Everbright Group was first established, it was mainly engaged in foreign trade and industrial investment. It was registered as "Unisplenguang Industrial Co., Ltd." and was renamed "China Everbright Group Co., Ltd." in July 1984.

On December 8, 2014, with the approval of the State Council, Everbright Group was restructured from a wholly state-owned enterprise to a joint-stock company and officially changed its name to "China Everbright Group Co., Ltd."

China Everbright Group Co., Ltd. is a large-scale financial holding group that spans finance and industry, domestic and overseas, and covers banking, securities, insurance, funds, trusts, futures, leasing, investment and environmental protection, cultural tourism, medicine and other industries.

In August 2016, China Everbright Group ranked 68th among the "Top 500 Chinese Enterprises 2016".

On July 19, 2018, the global synchronized Fortune Global 500 ranking was released, with China Everbright Group ranking 322nd.

On September 1, 2019, the 2019 China Top 500 Service Enterprises list was released in Jinan, with China Everbright Group Co., Ltd. ranked 42nd.
