The International Monetary Fund was established in Washington on December 27, 1945, based on the Agreement of the International Monetary Fund signed at the Bretton Woods Conference in July 1944.

The organization still exists. In December 2022, the People's Bank of China and the International Monetary Fund signed a memorandum of understanding on capacity building cooperation.
