Ding Xueliang was born in the countryside of southern Anhui. I received an intermittent primary, secondary and university education in China. 1984 went to study in the United States, and 1992 received a doctorate from Harvard University.

He has worked in Harvard Undergraduate College, Asia-Pacific Institute of ANU National University, CEIP Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His main research fields include comparative development/modernization, globalization and international competition, university system and innovation, public governance and political economy in a transitional society.
