The predecessor of the original Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Power (Yichang) was the Gezhouba Hydropower Engineering College established in 1978. It was successively affiliated to the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Electric Power Industry, and the State Electric Power Company. In 1996, it merged with the original Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Power to form a new university.
Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Power has become an important part of the "211 Project" university construction.
