Chengdu Institute of Physical Education is the only higher physical education institution in southwest China. Originally under the State Sports General Administration, it is now established by the State Sports General Administration and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government, with Sichuan Province as the main management. Formerly known as Sichuan Institute of Physical Education, the College was established in 1942 and renamed Chengdu Institute of Physical Education in 1950. Under the historical background of 1953 "regional layout", Chengdu Institute of Physical Education was transformed into one of the six major physical education institutes in China. At that time, it was named Southwest Institute of Physical Education, and now its name is 1956. After nearly 70 years of accumulation and renewal, the college has now become a prestigious sports college in southwest China and has a wide influence in the country.

The College adheres to the Party's educational policy, adheres to the motto of "Morality, Intelligence, Physical Fitness and Health", strives for survival by quality, strives for development by characteristics, persists in creating brands by disciplines, and persists in expanding the advantages of teachers, thus forming a distinctive school-running feature of "focusing on physical education, combining physical education with medicine, and cultivating' one specialty and many abilities'".

At present, the college covers a total area of 480,000 square meters, and its headquarters is located in the central area of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, adjacent to the famous historical site Wuhou Temple at home and abroad. The college has elegant environment, reasonable infrastructure layout, complete teaching, scientific research, training venues, experimental equipment and facilities, and complete functions. There are abundant books and literature resources, and a Chinese and foreign literature guarantee system covering all disciplines and majors in our college has been established.

Over the past 60 years, many famous sports experts and scholars have emerged in the college. There are former convener of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee's Physical Education Discipline Evaluation Group, experts from the National Social Science Fund Project Discipline Evaluation Group, high-level academic and technical personnel from the State Sports General Administration, academic and technical leaders from Sichuan Province and the State Sports General Administration, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, members of the National College Sports Steering Committee, members of the National Sports Master Degree Education Steering Committee, outstanding experts and doctoral supervisors from Sichuan Province, and more than 30 visiting professors and part-time professors at home and abroad. There are more than 800 faculty members, including 46 full-time teachers1person, 79 senior titles1person, more than 200 intermediate titles, 98 international and national referees and 86 international and national athletes.
