Lingnan University was originally founded by American Christian Church in old China, and later owned by China people. It is a private university.

Its predecessor was Gezhi Academy, which was founded in 1888 (14th year of Guangxu) and its school site was located in Guangzhou.

1904 moved to Le Kang Village, Haizhu District, Guangzhou, and was renamed Lingnan School.

From 1925 to 1927, Guangzhou was at the climax of the Great Revolution, and the school staff and students went on strike continuously. 1April, 927, the school announced its closure and dismissed its employees. In July of the same year, with the approval of the Guangdong provincial government, the school was taken over by China people and officially renamed as a private Lingnan University. Lingnan University set up a board of trustees and appointed Zhong Rongguang as the president. The former board of directors of new york was reorganized into the American Foundation of Lingnan University, which was mainly responsible for the salaries of foreign teachers.

Since 1930s, Lingnan University has set up schools of arts, science, engineering, agriculture, business and medicine. Graduate students are enrolled in science and master's degrees are awarded. We have also established exchange student systems with some universities in the United States, Japan, the Philippines and other countries, and mutually recognized graduate degrees with new york University in the United States. The school pays attention to basic theory, vigorously develops natural science, attaches importance to English training, advocates sports and has a strong academic atmosphere. Many famous scholars in China have taught in this school. During his stay in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he moved to Hongkong, which is now qujiang district in Shaoguan and Meixian District in Meizhou, and then moved back to Guangzhou after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War.
