The college has also made many gratifying achievements in scientific research, including undertaking more than 20 national projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation, publishing more than 500 papers, obtaining more than 200 patents and software copyrights, winning the National Science and Technology Progress Award 1, Yunnan Science and Technology Progress Award 1, Yunnan Natural Science and Technology Progress Award 6 and many other provincial and ministerial awards. Many achievements have been widely applied and realized.

The School of Information Engineering and Automation of Kunming University of Science and Technology has undertaken a number of vertical and horizontal scientific research projects, including key projects at or above the provincial level. The scale of scientific research has been continuously expanded, and many scientific research achievements and awards have been won, which has solved many key technologies for enterprise engineering and created good benefits. At the same time, a considerable number of papers have been published, and some teachers' scientific research achievements have been recognized by the society. Especially, some distinctive achievements have been made in industrial automation control technology, license plate recognition technology, network security technology, iris recognition technology, optical fiber sensing technology and so on.
