Financial leasing companies in the banking industry belong to financial institutions and are supervised by the non-banking department of the China Banking Regulatory Commission.

Non-bank financial leasing companies are not financial institutions and are supervised by the Ministry of Commerce of China.

The simplest way to identify whether a financial leasing company is a financial institution is that the words "financial leasing" should be included in the names of financial leasing companies specified by the CBRC, such as China Development Bank Financial Leasing Co., Ltd., China Industrial and Commercial Bank Financial Leasing Co., Ltd., China Merchants Bank Financial Leasing Co., Ltd., Minsheng Bank Financial Leasing Co., Ltd., and many non-bank financial institutions, such as Far East Leasing and Global Leasing.
