Before the establishment of British American Tobacco Company, the pirate brand cigarettes of British Wheels Company were sold by Shanghai Gongfa British Bank. 1902 On September 29th, six major tobacco companies, including American Tobacco Company, British Imperial Tobacco Company and Wheel Company, jointly established British American Tobacco Company (now British American Tobacco Company) in London, England, and set up factories in Shanghai to manufacture cigarettes. Among them, Pirate brand cigarettes are produced by No.1 British American Tobacco Factory, which is their brand to enter the cigarette market in China. British American Tobacco Company obtained preferential tax treatment from Qing government, Beiyang government and National government in China by virtue of unequal treaties, and relied on these advantages to gradually consolidate and expand its leading position in the production and marketing of cigarette industry in China, and finally made huge profits. After the company set up a factory in China, it successfully seized the tobacco consumption market by using the cheap labor in China. In order to expand sales, British American Tobacco Company not only carried out trial smoking, cigarette delivery and other activities, but also printed a large number of tobacco advertisements for publicity. Although some newly established national cigarette factories in China compete with them, they can't compete with them at all. Therefore, after pirate cigarettes were introduced into China, the sales volume increased year by year.
At that time, the words "pirate cigarette" were printed on the label of pirate cigarette in English, so its official name should be "pirate" cigarette. The cigarette label is set in the sea, and a sailor stands on the deck with his right hand akimbo and his left hand holding a knife, showing a smug smile. The auxiliary picture shows the gunner's action and the splash of shells on the ship, which echoes the name of pirates. Because the price of "Pirate" brand cigarettes is in the middle and low grade, many people don't understand English, and the description of "Dao" on the label of "Pirate" brand cigarettes has produced a common name "Lao Dao". It has been a habit for a long time, but its registered trademark "Pirate" is unknown. Besides the common name Lao Dao, there are transliteration names such as Paifa, Paili and Paifa, some of which are abbreviated as Dao, but most of them use Lao Dao.
Due to different national conditions and cultural backgrounds, the image of pirates regarded as heroes by European and American countries is synonymous with aggression in China. Therefore, many people in China are quite disgusted after seeing this "pirated" advertising image. After 19 19, due to the promotion of the New Culture Movement and the May 30th Movement, China people began to awaken their national and patriotic consciousness and began to resist pirated cigarettes. Sales of pirated cigarettes began to decline.
The banner poster of "Pirate" is shown in figure 1, and the cigarette label is shown in figure 2. British American Tobacco Company → State-owned Shanghai Tobacco Company brand
British American Tobacco Company realized the public's rejection of "pirates", so it immediately took measures to greatly modify cigarette labels and advertising pictures: the English lines on them were changed to Chinese "old Dao", the artillery on the ship was changed to iron boxes, the pirate marks on the hats and the beard on the mouth were also modified and "facelift", and the original broadsword in the hands of pirates was also changed to ancient old Dao. At the same time, a line of Latin was added under the Chinese "Laodao School", which translated into Chinese is an "outstanding work". The revised "Lao Dao" cigarette label also implies that this businessman with ancient Lao Dao came to China by boat to promote the world's best cigarette "Lao Dao". After some market promotion, the revised "Lao Dao brand" cigarette label was finally accepted by Chinese people. Since then, "Lao Dao" cigarette brand has been circulating in China for decades until the establishment of People's Republic of China (PRC). Although cigarette labels have developed from all English, half Chinese and half English to all Chinese, the picture has not changed much.
1934 British American Tobacco Company closed its factory in Shanghai. In June165438+1October of the same year, British American Tobacco Company established Zhong Yi Tobacco Company in Shanghai in the name of Chinese businessmen (successively opened 1 1 branch factories in Qingdao and Fuzhou) to operate cigarette manufacturing business, which opened up the distribution situation in major cities across the country with Shanghai as the center. Zhong Yi Tobacco Company is the regional headquarters of British American Tobacco Company in China, and its international headquarters is still in London.
After the founding of New China, the general public demanded that Lao Dao be renamed. 1April 1952 (say yes 195 1 April 1952), the state-owned Shanghai Tobacco Company took over the property rights of Zhong Yi Tobacco Company in Shanghai, and immediately publicly collected the new brand name and new pattern of "Lao Dao brand" cigarettes from the society, and successively printed on the back of 20 soft-packed "Lao Dao brand" cigarette labels "This trademark will be changed to a new brand". After obtaining the name of "Labor", attach the final notice that "this trademark will be changed to" Labor Card "before renaming.
The overview and Figure 3 show the cigarette label "Lao Dao", and the note 123 corresponds to the left, middle and right cigarette labels in Figure 4 (③ ④ ⑤) respectively. The picture comes from the article "From Old Knife Card to Work Card". Brand of State-owned Shanghai Tobacco Company
The pronunciation of "Lao Dao" and "Labor" is similar (especially in Shanghainese), which is easy for consumers to accept, so it is changed to "Labor Card". The modified "Labor" brand cigarettes are exclusively sold by China Monopoly Company.
The first edition of "Labor Brand" cigarettes is made by the state-owned Shanghai Tobacco Company (produced by the state-owned Shanghai Tobacco Industry Company, there are two versions). The cigarette label is set on the background of pink thin vertical bars, and the original theme of the cigarette label pattern design is the alliance of workers and peasants. On the left, a farmer is harvesting with a sickle, and on the right, a worker is operating a lathe. The background is vast fields and new factories. There is a famous saying in the middle of the sub-edition, "Labor creates the world". Above is the train running on the viaduct, and below is the large harvester for harvesting. (Figure 6) There is also the words "Abolish Laodao brand and change this brand name" under the advertisement. This cigarette label design reflected the call of "the most glorious work" at that time.
1958, when the Great Leap Forward era entered, the "badge" was changed to dark orange, and the trademark design was just a sketch pattern. The original pattern is that a worker and a farmer stand shoulder to shoulder with hammers and sickles (hammers and sickles represent workers and farmers respectively) on the pattern composed of wheat ears and gears, which is concise and just right, and the words "labor card" flash directly above, indicating the historical position of workers and peasants in China; The auxiliary layout box consists of semi-circular ears of wheat and gears. A crane holds a motor high in front of the circle, which means "China workers and peasants unite and the working class has strength". (as shown in fig. 8)
The "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" movement began at 1966. Like many other brands, the cigarette label of "Labor Brand" was affected and changed: the original pattern was changed to Lin Biao's inscription "Read Chairman Mao's book, listen to Chairman Mao's words, act according to Chairman Mao's instructions and be a good soldier of Chairman Mao." (produced by China Tobacco Industry Company); The sub-layout case is replaced by the original case. This kind of cigarette label is one of the rare cigarette labels inscribed by Lin Biao. It has distinct characteristics of the times and records the turbulent political environment at that time.
After the1971"9.13 incident, the Cultural Revolution ended, and the cigarette label of" Gongpai "was restored to the pattern of" hammer sickle ". Although the "Labor" brand cigarettes are marked as "produced by China Tobacco Industry Company", "produced by Shanghai Cigarette Factory" and "produced by Shanghai Tobacco Company", the patterns are basically unchanged.
"Labor" brand cigarettes stopped production at the end of the 20th century after nearly half a century. Filter tip cigarette, a brand of Zhong Yi Tobacco Company.
1992, Zhong Yi Tobacco (Group) Co., Ltd. (China Company, Qingdao Branch of Zhong Yi Tobacco Company, formerly known as British American Tobacco Company) decided to resume the production of old famous brands such as "Hadmen", but because the trademark of "Lao Dao" has been renewed by British American Tobacco Company, Zhong Yi Tobacco Qingdao Cigarette Factory's first application for "Lao Dao" trademark was rejected. Later, according to the relevant provisions of China's Trademark Law, Qingdao Cigarette Factory applied to revoke the trademark ownership of British American Tobacco Company "Lao Dao" in Chinese mainland on the grounds that it had not promoted and produced Lao Dao cigarettes in Chinese mainland for more than three consecutive years. From 65438 to 0994, Zhong Yi Tobacco Group Qingdao Cigarette Factory, Xuzhou Cigarette Factory and Yan 'an Cigarette Factory resumed the production of "Lao Dao" brand cigarettes. The cigarette label pattern was basically the same as that of "Lao Dao" brand cigarettes before liberation, with the words "Lao Dao Brand" and "Zhong Yi Tobacco Qingdao Cigarette Factory Production".
Qingdao Cigarette Factory of Zhong Yi Tobacco Group made a profit of nearly 300 million yuan with "Lao Dao" brand cigarettes in 1994, which was equivalent to the total profit of the factory before 10. However, this modification has not aroused the goodwill of consumers, and many people think that it is "out of curiosity and promotion considerations"; Some people also think that this change is a tendency to worship foreign things and flatter foreign countries, and that it is "not distinguishing right from wrong" and should be banned. Due to "great response from the masses and repeated criticism from the press", Lao Dao cigarettes stopped production completely around 1997 and withdrew from the cigarette market.
Lao Dao cigarettes produced again in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province and Qingdao, Shandong Province are labeled with English names "Lao Dao" or "Lordal" respectively. Although the packaging is different, the classic pirate image has been preserved (see Figure 9, Figure 10, Figure 1 1 is a two-color printed cigarette label produced by Yan 'an Cigarette Factory. These three pictures are all soft-packed cigarette labels.
