Speedstep technology is a technology that reduces power consumption by reducing the CPU operating frequency.

It is specially developed by Intel for notebook CPUs. It enables the rapid development of notebook CPUs and makes the functions of notebooks closer and closer to desktop computers. Speedstep technology support can dynamically enhance application performance and power utilization.

Since the voltage and power consumption will also be reduced when the frequency is lowered, on the one hand, the power consumption of the CPU itself will be reduced, and on the other hand, the heat generated will also be reduced, which can also reduce or even completely avoid the use of fans for heat dissipation. It further saves electricity, thus extending the battery life; on the other hand, it can return to full speed for maximum performance when using AC power.

Differences from early SpeedStep technology

Different from early SpeedStep technology, enhanced SpeedStep technology can dynamically adjust the CPU frequency. When the CPU usage is low or close to zero, the CPU rate is dynamically reduced, causing its operating frequency to drop, thereby reducing voltage, power consumption, and heat generation.

Once it is detected that the CPU usage is very high, it will immediately resume working at the original rate. Of course, for the mobile version of the processor, you can still set it to never adjust to the highest frequency when using battery, but to always work at the second highest or lowest frequency.

EIST technology is implemented by the operating system to adjust the CPU frequency. It is supported by Windows XP and above. Desktop computers can choose to turn on/off EIST technology in the BIOS.
