Hancheng Dahongpao Zanthoxylum bungeanum. Hancheng Zanthoxylum bungeanum has a long history, with a cultivation history of more than 600 years. According to the "Hancheng County Chronicle" written in the 35th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1607 AD), in terms of local products, it is described that "the only ones allowed within the territory are hemp, kapok, pepper, persimmon and walnut". The "Extended Chronicles of Hancheng County" written in the 42nd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (i.e. 1703 AD) also has a description of "the mountain pepper in the northwest, the meandering streams, and the trees in every wilderness village and villa, with different species, including Dahongpao... as far away as the Yangtze River and Huaihe River". Since the reform and opening up, successive municipal committees and municipal governments of Hancheng have taken the development of Zanthoxylum bungeanum advantageous industry as a strategic task to revitalize Han and enrich the people. After more than 20 years of unremitting efforts, a hundred-mile 3,500-mile-long 3,500-meter-long paddy field has been built throughout the Qianshantaiyuan District in the central part of the city. The "Hancheng City Pepper Industrialization Development and Construction" started in 2000 and was included in the National Mountainous Area Economic Industrialization Demonstration Project by the State Planning Commission in 2003. Hancheng Dahongpao Zanthoxylum bungeanum has long been known as the "Famous Chinese Pepper" for its "large ears and many grains, thick skin, rich flesh, bright color, strong fragrance and moderate numbness". In 1994, it won the "Excellent Product" Award at the National Forestry Famous, Premium and New Products Expo. In 1998, it won the certification of "High Yield, High Quality and Efficient Agricultural Products" from the Chinese Agricultural Society. In 2000, it was among the first batch named by the State Forestry Administration as the "Hometown of China's Famous and Premium Economic Forest Zanthoxylum bungeanum". In 2001, the Hancheng City government funded and collaborated with the School of Food Science and Engineering of Northwest A&F University to formulate local standards for Zanthoxylum bungeanum in Shaanxi Province, which were officially promulgated by the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision in 2002. The "Hancheng Dahongpao Zanthoxylum bungeanum" certificate of origin trademark declared in 1998 was approved and registered by the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce in June 2002. It is the only origin certification trademark registered by the National Trademark Office for pepper and agricultural products in the northwest region.
