History of bird's nest in Honghu Lake
on October 23, 1938, Li Kenong, director of the Eighth Route Army office in Wuhan, and Pan Zinian, president of Xinhua Daily, led the last batch of staff of the Eighth Office and Xinhua Daily to leave Wuhan on the "Xinshenglong" ship. When the ship went to Yanziwo (now honghu city) on the Yangtze River in Jiayu County, Hubei Province, in order to avoid Japanese bombing, Li Kenong informed the ship to stop and dock. At 3: 3 in the afternoon, four Japanese planes suddenly flew over the sky, dropping several bombs, one of which hit the ship, and then the enemy plane flew low and strafed with machine guns. Sixteen comrades of Xinhua Daily and nine comrades of the Eighth Office died heroically, and more than 5 people were killed. When I was killed, I retreated to help each other and actively rescued the victims. Its revolutionary spirit of being fearless, brave and tenacious, and not afraid of sacrifice, like the path of the sun and the moon, will never be erased. In 1987, in order to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the martyrs killed on the "Xinshenglong" ship, with the care and support of relevant departments and people, the CPC Yanwo Town Committee and the Yanwo Town People's Civil Affairs Office built a monument and martyrs cemetery on the Yangtze River Bund where the incident occurred. In March, 1987, Comrade Deng Yingchao wrote the inscription "Immortality of the martyrs killed on the Xinshenglong Ship", the famous writer Lu Dingyi wrote the inscription "honghu city Yanziwo Xinshenglong Martyrs Cemetery", and the old man Tong Xiaopeng, the former director of Zhou Enlai Office, wrote the inscription "Immortality of the martyrs who died for resisting Japan and saving the country". On December 26, 1992, the memorial to the victims of the "Xinshenglong" was designated as the key cultural relics protection unit in Hubei Province by the Hubei Provincial People's Government. In 1998, in order to protect the monument from flood erosion, the Bird's Nest Town Committee and the town government moved the monument to Xinshenglong Primary School and formulated relevant measures to strengthen the management and protection of the tombstone. At this point, the heroic spirit of the martyrs can rest in peace, and the spirit can last forever.
