Hefei lies between the Yangtze River and Huaihe River and is surrounded by Chaohu Lake, one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China. It can enter the sea through Nanfeihe River, Chaohu Lake and Yuxi River.
There are three landforms in the territory: hilly land, low hills and low-lying plains. The hilly area is the main landform, and the Jianghuai watershed runs through the whole territory from west to east.
