The self-heating package of small hot pot should not be discarded at will, and should be classified as hazardous waste for disposal.

There are about three ingredients in the self-heating food heating package on the market:

The first is quicklime, commonly known as (calcium oxide)

When it meets water, it generates calcium hydroxide and releases a lot of heat, but the water temperature can only reach about 60-80℃.

Two. Iron, aluminum, magnesium, carbon powder and salt.

When it meets water, the galvanic cell will react. Iron, aluminum and magnesium powder are used as the negative electrode of the battery, carbon powder is used as the positive electrode of the battery, and salt is dissolved in water as the electrolyte solution. They react with oxygen and release heat through redox reaction. The object can be heated to 150℃, and the steam temperature can reach 200℃.

3. Add lime powder on the basis of the second one.

This heating reaction will be more intense and produce a lot of gas.

Treatment of heating components:

The heating bag obtains heat through chemical reaction to heat food. If the substances in the heating bag react completely, the remaining substances tend to be stable and will not cause strong harm.

Nevertheless, the first quicklime material becomes hydrated lime Ca(OH) after heating. It has strong alkalinity, sterilization and corrosion resistance, and is corrosive to skin and fabrics, so it needs to be classified as hazardous waste.

Second, as a metal powder, it generates alkaline substances after chemical reaction, which is also harmful to human body, so it also needs to be classified as hazardous waste.

In addition, the heating package releases heat through the chemical reaction of water. If the heating package is not completely reacted and discarded at will, it will continue to react with water to generate heat, resulting in other adverse consequences. Therefore, the heating package must react completely, and then it is packaged after it is completely cooled, and it is treated as harmful waste.

Matters needing attention in self-heating hot pot:

1. The heating package can only be heated with cold water, not water, otherwise the reaction may be too intense, resulting in splashing and scalding.

2. Self-heating hot pot belongs to "aviation dangerous goods", so you can't carry or check this kind of food by plane.

3. During the heating process, a lot of hot air will be generated. Be sure to open the vent to avoid accidental injury caused by excessive pressure accumulated in the small hot pot.
