abstract

A method and apparatus for shortening the length of the lead-in thread of a double-cylinder circular knitting machine or knitting machine, wherein, before the knitting operation starts, the end of the yarn fed by a corresponding yarn guide is cut by a yarn cutting clamping device, and the cutting clamping device can face the needle cylinder of the knitting machine in the direction that the needle cylinder rotates around its own thread on the downstream side of the yarn guide relative to the yarn guide and the cutting clamping device. The method includes keeping the yarn (12) clamped by the cutting clamping device (2) even after the yarn has been lifted by each needle (60) at the beginning of the knitting operation, and cutting the yarn portion between the first needle lifting the yarn and the clamping point clamping the yarn in the cutting clamping device (2) at the beginning of the knitting operation. The yarn (12) is lifted by the leading-in cutting device (3) near the first needle. The yarn is cut, so the lead-in line is very short, and no further cutting process or step is needed.
