Development History
In 1912, Hayakawa Tokuji founded the metal processing industry in Tokyo as a private enterprise. After the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1924, the factory was moved to the current location of Osaka Company and rebuilt. In September of the same year, the Hayakawa Metal Industry Research Institute was established, and the manufacturing of closing machines and their parts began. In 1929, the first AC vacuum tube radio was produced and used the Sharp trademark. In May 1935, Hayakawa Metal Industry Research Institute was established with a capital of 300,000 yen, adopting the organizational form of a joint-stock company. In June 1936, it was renamed Hayakawa Metal Industry Co., Ltd., and in May 1942, it was renamed Hayakawa Electric Industry Co., Ltd. In May 1949, the company's shares were listed for the first time on the Osaka Stock Exchange.
In 1953, it cooperated with American companies, imported parts and components, took the lead in producing TV sets in Japan, and achieved mass production. In 1961, the company's central research institute was established and officially began to engage in electronic technology research. The following year, Japan's first electronic microwave oven was successfully developed and subsequently entered mass production. Since then, the company has used its original technology to continuously develop products that are number one in Japan or the world, and in the process the company has continued to grow and develop.
In October 1967, the company merged with Sharp Electric Co., Ltd. and became its current trade name in January 1970.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Sharp developed its original products at a rate of approximately one piece every 2-3 years. After entering the 1980s, the development rate increased to about 1.4 pieces per year, of which nearly 80% were world-first products. Sharp's business scope has also expanded from previous home appliances to many fields such as electronic calculators, copy machines, word processors, cash register computers and other office machines, information system machines, and more. Its advanced electronic technology development capabilities are highly praised both in Japan and abroad.
