The history of Shanxi Road Church

In 1872, Methodist pastor Dagiri came to Tianjin and founded Wesley Church. The name of the church was in memory of John Wesley, the founder of the church. At first, he stayed at the Zizhulin Holy Way Church, and then bought land on Hai Avenue to build a church. In 1903, Methodist Church sold the old church and purchased more than 3 acres of land on General Foch Road (commonly known as Lizhan Street, today's Binjiang Road) in the French Concession.

In 1913, a new church was built with a construction area of ??2,249 square meters and was presided over by American pastor Daji Rui. Wesley Hall has a novel architectural style and is also known as the "Octagonal Tower". The inside of the chapel is round and the outside is square. There are 8 large columns and a large arched dome in the hall, forming an octagonal shape. The auditorium is divided into three floors, the basement and the first and second floors. It is 15 meters high. The bell tower is about 18 meters and has a bell tower on the top. There is a large copper-clad cross more than 1 meter high, and there are 850 wooden folding chairs with iron legs in the hall. The pastor's building is a two-story building with a brick and wood structure. It is the pastor's dormitory.

The Weiss Auditorium at that time was the largest Christian church in Tianjin and the central church of the Tianjin Methodist Church.

In the autumn of 1932, Dr. Song Shangjie of the Shanghai Bethel Mission was invited to lead a preaching revival meeting.

In 1935, a two-story mixed-structure outer hall building was expanded on the east side of the auditorium. There is a small auditorium downstairs for external sermons, and a living room and office upstairs, and there is a bridge connected to the lobby.

In 1958, the Christian Church implemented joint services, and Wesley Church became one of the four joint churches and was renamed Binjiang Road Church.

In 1966, the church was occupied during the Cultural Revolution. In December 1979, Binjiang Taoist Hall was the first to resume gatherings among the churches in Tianjin.

In 1991, during the first phase of construction of Binjiang Commercial Building, Wesley Hall was seriously damaged due to ground subsidence.

In 1995, during the second phase of the Binjiang Commercial Building construction, after consultation with the Tianjin Christian Council, it was decided to demolish the original Wesley Church, demolish private houses at the Shanxi intersection of Hami Road, and build a new Shanxi Road church.

In April 1996, the new church was completed, which increased the land area and building area than the original Wesley Hall.
