Li Jinshang (1862-1922), the founder of Lee Kum Kee, was born in Nanshui Town, Zhuhai, originally from Xinhui. The young lost his father and made a living by farming with his mother Cai Min. After the death of her mother, Li Jinshang listened to the advice of the villagers, collecting oysters from the oyster people during the day and cooking oyster sauce for sale at night. Nanshui has always been famous for producing oysters. Oyster sauce is a good seasoning. But there are several families in Nanshui who make a living by cooking oyster sauce and selling it. Li Jinshang's oyster sauce is cooked properly and the concentration is moderate. In addition, he is warm and generous, and his popularity is excellent. Therefore, in addition to the nearby people, many merchants from Jiangmen, Shiqi, Guangzhou and Macao also patronize him. In 1888, Li Jinshang asked someone to write the "Lee Kum Kee" signboard in the shop. Since then, "Lee Kum Kee" oyster sauce has become famous, and people have gradually called Li Jinshang "Lee Kum Kee". Unexpectedly, in 192, a fire broke out in Nanshui Market, and half of Nanshui Street and Lee Kum Kee Oyster Oil Village were reduced to ashes. Li Jinshang had to take his wife and belt to Macao to make a living, and still managed "Lee Kum Kee" oyster sauce as a business and also engaged in groceries. In December 1922, Li Jinshang died in Macau at the age of 6. His sons, Li Zhaonan and Li Zhaodeng, inherited their father's business, constantly opened up sources of goods, improved production technology and developed the management of "Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce".
