The legal basis for Mexico’s intellectual property system is the Development and Industrial Property Law promulgated on June 27, 1991. Mexico is a party to the Paris Convention and a party to the PCT Patent Cooperation Treaty. Therefore, foreign companies and individuals can apply for patents in Mexico through the Paris Convention and the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty).

The Mexican design patent is valid for 15 years from the date of application and cannot be renewed.
