Chang 'an is the symbol and pride of the Tang Dynasty. Although the capital of Han Dynasty was Chang 'an, Chang 'an in Tang Dynasty was located in the southeast of Chang 'an in Han Dynasty. When Emperor Wendi of the Sui Dynasty was in office, he felt that Chang 'an, the old capital, was "cramped, with a lot of sparse palaces and salt water", so he ordered Yuwen Kai to host another new capital on the side of Longshou Mountain and renamed it Daxing City. In the Tang Dynasty, the name Chang 'an was still used.
Chang 'an Outer City is surrounded by the Northern Imperial City in the east, west and south, with Miyagi in the north, Daming Palace in the east and Xingqing Palace in the west of the Outer City in the south. There are twelve gates and twelve main streets in the outer city. Square-style straight streets are separated by squares, and princes, princesses, senior officials, nobles and ordinary people have their own places to go.
The scale of Chang 'an in Tang Dynasty was much larger than that in Han Dynasty. Even as a metropolis with a population of more than one million, about a quarter of the squares in the south are sparsely populated. However, houses near the Imperial City, the East-West City and other places are still in demand. At three o'clock, there are still rumors that officials rely on power to force people to move.
There are street drums on twelve streets in the outer city. At dawn, the drums beat 300 times, and then the doors of each square are opened. When it gets dark, the drums will be 800. ...
