The greenhouse watermelon planting history in Handai Town, Shijiazhuang, Hebei began in 1994. After continuous development practice, the Hebei Provincial Government gave the Handai Town was awarded the glorious title of "Hometown of Greenhouse Watermelon in Hebei Province".

Today, Hanhan Town has built three professional watermelon markets and three technology demonstration parks. The watermelon industry has absorbed nearly 30,000 rural laborers, forming more than 400 technical melon farmers whose profession is exporting watermelon planting technology. Relying on the Watermelon Industrial Park, a professional watermelon seedling breeding base has been established and a stable professional seedling team has been formed. An average of 10 million melon seedlings are exported to the town and surrounding areas every year. It promoted the development of farmers' cooperative organizations. From 2001 to 2003, the Handan Town Watermelon Association was rated as an "Advanced Farmer Professional Cooperative Economic Organization" by the Shijiazhuang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government for three consecutive years.

For more than ten years, Dazhongpeng watermelon in Handai Town has been famous for its juicy flesh, sweet taste and early availability. It has been sold well in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, Mongolia and the three northeastern provinces, and has fully covered all cities and counties in Hebei Province. The watermelon planting area in large and medium-sized sheds in the town has been maintained at about 20,000 acres for many years. In 2005, the planting area reached 25,000 acres, the output reached 100,000 tons, and the average profit per mu reached 6,000 yuan. The melon farmers in the town achieved an income of 150 million yuan.

Led by the "Xinshami" watermelon, the watermelon industry in Handai Town has formed a complete industrial chain. Promote the comprehensive development of vegetable planting, melon and vegetable sales, transportation, catering, technology export, melon seedling breeding and marketing, etc. In 2000, Handai Town registered the "Xinshami" watermelon trademark with the State Administration for Industry and Commerce. In 2004, the "Xinshami" trademark was rated as a "well-known brand" by Shijiazhuang City's first agricultural industrialization product promotion meeting. When Premier 1 of the State Council visited Handai Town on June 5, 2005, he also expressed his approval of the "Xinshami" watermelon. In 2006, Handai Town applied to the Hebei Provincial Administration for Industry and Commerce to recognize "Xinshami" as a "famous trademark" in Hebei Province.

2. Site conditions

The soil texture is sandy soil, loose, with good permeability, organic matter content ≥14.1g/kg, and pH value 7 to 8.

3. Cultivation and management

1. Watermelon seedling cultivation: Pumpkin is used as rootstock for grafting and cultivating seedlings. The grafted seedlings should have 3 to 4 true leaves and a well-developed root system when they emerge from the bed.

2． Planting: The planting period is in early April, and the planting density is 10,500 to 12,000 plants/hectare.

3. Pruning: In addition to the main vine, keep two lateral vines at the base, and select one melon on the second or third female flower.

4． Pollination: artificial pollination is used.

5. Watering and fertilizing: Apply no less than 15 tons of organic fertilizer per hectare. Watering is prohibited after the fruit size stops enlarging.

6. Environmental and safety requirements: The use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, etc. must comply with relevant national regulations and must not pollute the environment.

4. Harvesting

Harvested in early June. When harvesting, avoid harvesting on rainy days, and there should be no dew on the melon surface.

5. Quality characteristics

1. Sensory characteristics: The fruit is round; the peel is green with dark green stripes on the bottom; the flesh is pink, bright red, and bright in color; the pulp is crisp, sweet, juicy, refreshing, and has no yellow veins.
