Meng Chang, the late ruler of Shu after the Five Dynasties, likes to appreciate famous flowers and prefers hibiscus. He ordered all hibiscus trees to be planted around the walls of Chengdu, the capital, and assigned special personnel to take care of them. Every autumn, hibiscus blooms, and the city is full of beautiful flowers, so Chengdu is named "Furong City". On May 26th, 1983, the Standing Committee of the Ninth People's Congress of Chengdu decided to officially name Hibiscus as the city flower of Chengdu.

Chengdu has a long and unique historical origin and profound cultural accumulation. As early as about 4,5 to 3,7 years ago, a series of settlement centers of ancient Shu ancestors called "Baodun Culture" appeared in Chengdu Plain. These settlement centers have rammed walls and built places for sacrifice and assembly.
According to a large number of historical remains unearthed from Jinsha Site, it can be basically inferred that from the late Yin Shang Dynasty to the early Western Zhou Dynasty at the latest, Chengdu has become the central capital of the ancient Shu Kingdom.
