Word circulation memory method

The human brain has a characteristic that it requires repeated stimulation of certain information to remember it. The circular memory method is based on this. The trick is to memorize the words in two-two loops in a continuous rapid loop of memory. When our country widely promoted Russian in the 1950s, it adopted this method to achieve rapid proficiency in Russian.

The average person can remember 100 words per hour after mastering it. Some people can remember 150 words. And my average speed reaches 225 (I have performed before). The specific steps are as follows:

First, according to your own memory, divide the words to be memorized into several groups (for convenience of description, here are set to a, b, c, d,....groups), and average Each group has 4-6 words. Of course, this also depends on the difficulty of the word. If the words are longer or have many meanings, each group will have fewer words; otherwise, there will be more.

Then:

(1) Study Group A. After studying, review Group A once. (Please note later on how to remember)

(2) Study Group B and review Group B again.

(3) Review groups A and B together.

(4) Study Group C and review Group C.

(5) Study Group D and review Group D.

(6) Review groups C and D together.

(7) Review groups A, B, C, and D once.

(8) Follow the previous seven steps to study and review groups E, F, G, and H.

(9) Combine groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H and review them again.

(10) Follow the first nine steps to learn and review groups I, J, K, L, M, N, O, and P.

(11) Review the sum of the groups A, B, C,...M, N, O, P.

(12) According to this method, study and review the next group 17---group 32.

(13) Then review these 32 groups of words together.

(It is best to draw the above memory procedures on paper to promote understanding)

In this way, if each group of 6 words is memorized, 32 groups of 192 words will be learned. During the whole process, each word stimulates the brain 7 times. So you can remember it more firmly.

Notes:

1) The energy must be concentrated, otherwise the efficiency will be very low

2) It is not necessary to know the letter combination and Chinese meaning of each word. Memorize them first time (you won't be able to do that), but become familiar with them. In this circular memory method, all words are "seen" rather than "memorized" - there is no need to memorize them, just browse the words easily. Each time you "read" a word, it takes about 2-5 seconds.

3) The entire memorization process usually takes within an hour, otherwise, the efficiency will decrease.

4) Regarding review:

Relevant scientific experiments show that when the human brain is exposed to a certain information for the first time, the information only lasts for 1 millisecond in the brain; second After the first exposure to the information, the memory lasts about 1 second; the third exposure, the memory lasts about one minute; the fourth exposure, the memory lasts for half an hour; the fifth exposure, the memory lasts one or two hours; the sixth exposure, the memory lasts seven or eight hours. ; The seventh time can last for more than ten hours. If you review it the next day, your memory will last longer.

If it takes 5 seconds to memorize each word "viewed", then the above method can be used to familiarize 192 words 7 times in 1 and a half hours. And the memory effect is good.

In memorizing words, memory accounts for three points, method accounts for one point, and review accounts for six points. Just studying and memorizing without reviewing will result in no success or even failure. It is recommended that after reviewing during the day, review again at night before going to bed; review again the next morning, and review again three days later (or review once a week later). This way you can remember the words.

Once again, memorizing words is an arduous process. There is no shortcut. It requires repeated and tireless review ----- This is the most important part of memorizing words!

About proactive and post-active effects

When the human brain memorizes information, it is easily affected by the information memorized previously, which is called proactive influence; at the same time, it is also easily affected by the information memorized later, which is called posterior effect. Everyone has this experience. For an article, it is easy to remember the beginning and the end, but it is difficult to remember the middle part.

Therefore, it is better to review words before going to bed, as the last thing before going to bed, so as to avoid after-effects; or in the morning, as the first thing to do when getting up in the morning, so as to avoid pre-positive effects. .

People usually think that mastering a foreign language requires passing three levels (phonics, vocabulary, and grammar) and five generals (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating). Relatively speaking, mastering English requires Words are the hardest level. English has a large vocabulary, with a total vocabulary of at least 600,000, a practical vocabulary of 80,000 to 10,000, and a basic vocabulary of 4,000. Generally speaking, there is no shortcut to mastering English words, but we can choose some different methods to memorize English words. Here are 20 ways to memorize English words.

1. Logical memory:

Memory words through the internal logical relationship of the word itself and the external logical relationship between words. 1) Remember several letters as one: (ight) light, right, night, might, sight, tight. 2) Old on the outside and new on the inside, such as: bridge (bridge) is regarded as b+ridge ridge (ridge); sharp is regarded as s+harp harp (harp). 3) New on the outside and old on the inside, such as: cleave (split) is regarded as c+leave; tact (tact) is regarded as t+act.

2. Associative memory:

1) The association of sounds and shapes, that is, memorizing words according to pronunciation rules. 2) The association between form and meaning, such as: eye sees two e's as two eyes. banana treats a as individual bananas. bird regards b and d as two wings. 3) Onomatopoeia, associated with actual sounds, such as: gong, coo.

3. Classification memory:

Category words into categories such as animals, plants, etc., and carry out classification memory. You can find a classification dictionary as a reference.

4. Card memory:

Make your own word cards to memorize words with you at any time. The word form, part of speech, meaning, phonetic symbols, collocations, examples, etc. of the word are written on the card.

5. Sensory memory:

When memorizing words, don’t use only one sense, use multiple senses as much as possible, such as listening, reading, handwriting, seeing, memorizing, etc.

6. Software memory:

Those who have computers can use computer software to memorize words, such as: "Happy Memorization of Words", "Memorization of Words for the First Time", "I Love to Memorize Words", etc.

7. Word formation memory:

Use the word formation method to memorize words by analyzing root, prefix, derivation and synthesis.

8. Chart memory:

Use visual charts for memory. Its advantage is that the meaning, shape and object are intuitively combined. You can find an English illustrated dictionary as a reference.

9. Game memory:

Memorize words in the atmosphere of playing games by yourself and the group.

10. Song memory:

Memorize words by singing English songs. There are many English songs in software such as "Tingba" and "Hearing Superman", with lyrics and translations.

11. Reading memory:

Memory words by reading English articles, novels, etc., and pay attention to the appropriate difficulty.

12. Synonym memory:

By memorizing words together with synonyms, you can accurately understand the meaning of the word, without paying attention to the difference in meaning.

13. Antonym memory:

Memorize words together with antonyms to expand the meaning of the word.

14. Dictionary memory:

Memorizing the dictionary is a forced memorization method. Its disadvantage is that it is easy to forget and just remember the meaning of the word in isolation. Can be used as a short-term reinforcement method.

15. Review and memory:

Once the words are memorized, they will be forgotten soon. Review them every once in a while to consolidate the words you have learned.

16. Trademark memory:

Memory words anytime and anywhere through the trademarks and advertisements you see.

18. Understanding memory:

By correctly understanding the original meaning, extended meaning and metaphorical meaning of words, such as: second is "second", which comes from the ancient six points, minutes and seconds, so second is also "second" ”, further extended, it can also be understood as “auxiliary”. This method is particularly suitable for those words with multiple meanings.

19. Contact memory:

It is best not to memorize words in isolation, but to associate them with related things as much as possible. 1) Contact the general meaning of the article you have learned and the context. 2) Contact phrases and collocations.

20. Comprehensive memory:

It is best to use multiple methods to memorize words, not just one, and use their respective advantages to achieve the best memory effect.

1 Preparation before memorizing words:

1) Make up your mind: If you decide to memorize words, you must persist until the end. There are many vocabulary books that will say: Using this book, you will easily memorize many vocabulary words and easily pass the CET-4 and CET-6 postgraduate entrance exams. In fact, memorizing words is a very tiring task. Any method can only make people remember the words more accurately, but it will not make people remember them effortlessly. And many people were initially moved by these words and ambitiously wanted to memorize the words. By the middle, many people couldn’t hold on and gave up. In the end, I only remembered the words from Chapter A, and the one I am most familiar with is always: abandon. This will create an illusion for you and make you feel that you have no perseverance, which will make you fearful of memorizing words. When I memorized words by myself, although it was very painful at times, I always persisted until the end. When I was memorizing TOEFL words, I was very depressed. Others were enjoying their summer vacation, but I was chewing on more than 6,000 words in the hot weather. Halfway through, I almost gave up, but luckily I persevered and gained a lot.

In order to persevere, I suggest you choose a longer holiday. Such as winter and summer vacations, May 11, etc. You should also adjust your mental state to the best. Once you start, don’t stop, even if you memorized it yesterday, you will forget it today (in fact, it is very common)

2) Book selection: Book selection should be targeted, and it is best not to select letters. Vocabulary books arranged in a row are more difficult to memorize. Students who try to memorize words for the first time will not be able to persevere easily. I recommend the vocabulary books of Spark and Smart. Both books are organized by root affixes. However, beginners should not rely too much on the analysis of root affixes and should only use it as an auxiliary means. When your vocabulary reaches a certain level, you will naturally be able to freely use root affixes to expand your vocabulary. Just like learning Chinese, you can only understand the radicals if you master a certain number of Chinese characters. If you feel that the vocabulary in the two books is too much, you can choose Vocabulary Basic from New Oriental. This book lists the core vocabulary for Level 4, and there are only more than a thousand. This is also the first vocabulary book I have memorized, and it is basically enough for Level 4. Used. But the book is arranged alphabetically, and like many New Oriental books, this book is more prepared for TOEFL and GRE, and is not very targeted for CET-4 and CET-6. No matter which vocabulary book you choose, you should buy the tape. It will allow you to review words in a relatively short period of time and make you familiar with American pronunciation, which is good for taking listening tests.

3) How much is enough to memorize: For this question, of course the more the better, but you can’t rely too much on vocabulary. In fact, an undergraduate is fully capable of mastering a vocabulary of seven to eight thousand. When I was a sophomore, I could memorize the vocabulary of Level 4 and Level 6 in one to one and a half months. If you have higher requirements, you can memorize IELTS or TOEFL vocabulary selections, which are commonly used words in English. In your junior year, if you decide to take the postgraduate entrance exam, you can start memorizing the vocabulary for the postgraduate entrance exam; if you decide to take the T or G exam, you can also start preparing, so that the pressure will be much less. Memorizing words can improve your English ability, but it doesn't solve all your problems. When reading, you will also encounter many new words. A teacher who passed the G test at New Oriental told me that they don’t even know some children’s English vocabulary. I will talk about the issue of reading vocabulary later. Also, don’t think that memorizing words equals fluent speaking. Chinese students often have a huge vocabulary but cannot speak a few complete sentences. In fact, people with low levels of education in the United States may only know a few hundred words, but they use words very flexibly. To solve this problem, capable students can pay attention to the content of TOEFL or IELTS listening and see how native speakers use those small words. You can also take a look at "TOEFL Listening Vocabulary 2000" and memorize the example sentences in it.

4) When to recite: before going to bed and after getting up. You can also look at it casually when you have nothing to do. If you memorize the first two times, there will be no proactive curve and retroactive curve, and the memorization efficiency will be very high. But you can’t stick to this. If you feel very lackluster at these two times (especially in the morning), it is better to change the time. In short, what suits you is the best.

2 Principles of memorization

1) From less to more: When you first memorize words, because you are not quite used to it, you may not be able to memorize them quickly and you may not be able to remember them. At this time, you can definitely carry less, about 60 per day, or even less. Don’t hear that people who take the GRE memorize more than 200 words every day, and you want to imitate them and memorize like that. If your goal today is to memorize 500 words, but you only memorize 50, your pain will be greater than your joy of success. But after memorizing it for a while, your speed of memorizing words must increase. Some people say, I prepare ten words every day and memorize level 6 words in two months. Is that okay? In theory it is possible. But memorizing words is boring. If you keep memorizing the same vocabulary book, you will get bored sooner or later. When memorizing words, you must work hard at one go, otherwise you will fail again and again.

2) Timely review: memorizing words is actually a process of forgetting and anti-forgetting. Timely review can minimize forgetting. According to the opinions of experts, it is usually memorized on the first day and reviewed on the 2nd, 4th, 8th and 15th days. This is applicable whether you memorize the postgraduate entrance examination, TOEFL or GRE vocabulary in the future.

3) Doing the questions: After memorizing the vocabulary for the first time, you should review and do the questions at the same time. The effect of doing it before and after will not be good.

4) Reading: This is also a good way to review vocabulary, and it is also where the huge vocabulary of Chinese students comes into play. What to read? I strongly recommend "English World" to students who are taking CET-4 or CET-6 and postgraduate studies. Many of the editors of this book are test writers for CET-4 and CET-6 exams, and many of the passages in the book were revised and turned into real questions. 21st Century and China Daily are also good, with many level 4 and 6 words on them. Those who want to take the T and G exams should read the original materials and experience real English thinking. When you encounter a new word while reading or a word you have memorized but forgotten, don't immediately look it up in the dictionary or Wenquxing, just let it go, unless it appears many times and affects your reading. For new words, you can guess based on the words you have learned and the root words you have mastered, or you can make a rough guess based on the full text. If you can't guess, just pass it. Because when reading, you read the entire article, not just one or two sentences. You have to grasp the meaning of the article as a whole. When many Chinese students read, they click on the words one by one and translate them one by one in order to understand them. This is not actually reading practice. After I memorized Level 4 vocabulary, I read a lot of original materials and guessed a lot of new words. In fact, after reading the translation of the article, I realized that I didn't understand any of it, but it improved my reading and ability to grasp the article as a whole.
