Is Black Toothpaste a Chinese brand?

It is a Chinese brand.

In the 1930s, brothers Yan Bolin and Yan Zhongli from Ningbo founded Haolai Pharmaceuticals (the predecessor of Haolai Chemicals) during the British Concession in Shanghai. Based on the formula of China Chemical Industry Society’s white jade toothpaste, they created a new type of toothpaste. Toothpaste, "Black", a domestic toothpaste brand, has officially entered the stage of history.

The toothpaste is named "Black" because African blacks have extraordinarily white teeth due to their dark skin. Later, its advertisement claimed that the black toothpaste formula contained tooth-cleansing medicine from a certain tree in Africa, and used this to promote it. With its "mysterious" and unique double mint formula and refreshing taste, Black Toothpaste quickly became popular throughout Shanghai as soon as it was launched, becoming the first choice and must-have daily necessities for Shanghai residents. In the 1940s, black brands moved to Hong Kong, Taiwan and other regions, and their sales networks quickly expanded to Southeast Asia.

Extended information:

It once defeated Colgate, the world's toothpaste overlord, in the Southeast Asian market, and its market share of 20% to 40% in the Southeast Asian market was not surpassed by the latter. It is reported that because black toothpaste was restricted from export due to alleged "racial discrimination", black people updated the brand's English name and trademark avatar. Since then, black people have focused more on the road to internationalization.

In 1995, the black brand, which was well-known in the Southeast Asian market and Hong Kong and Taiwan, chose to return to mainland China and prepare to build a global production base in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province. However, contrary to the fact that Black Toothpaste is a Chinese brand, Zhonghua Toothpaste, which was founded in 1954, was invested and leased by Unilever Technologies of the United Kingdom/Netherlands in 1994. Currently, the Zhonghua Toothpaste brand is owned by Unilever.
