What is the background of the dispute between North and South Daoxiang Village?

Beijing Daoxiang Village has a history of more than 100 years. Due to its exquisite craftsmanship and authentic taste, it has become a representative of Beijing-style pastries. As early as 1993, Beijing Daoxiangcun had been recognized as a "Chinese Time-honored Brand"; in 2014, the "Daoxiangcun" word mark was recognized as a well-known trademark by the Trademark Office.

The success of Beijing Daoxiang Village has attracted some manufacturers to "free ride". The highly similar trademarks, logos and products make it difficult for consumers to distinguish. In response to market chaos, Beijing Daoxiang Village filed an objection to the "" trademark applied for registration by Suzhou Daoxiang Village as early as 2009. The Trademark Review and Adjudication Board, Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court, Beijing High Court, and the Supreme People's Court have successively made rulings or judgments: the "" logo and the "" trademark of Beijing Daoxiangcun Company constitute similar trademarks on similar goods and shall not be registered.

After the final judgment came into effect, Suzhou Daoxiang Village continued to use the Daoxiangcun word trademark. Therefore, Beijing Daoxiang Village filed a civil lawsuit with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court in September 2015. After more than two years of trial, the Beijing Intellectual Property Court issued a behavioral preservation ruling, requiring Suzhou Daoxiang Village to immediately stop using the "Daoxiangcun" logo on pastry products on the e-commerce platform. At this point, the trademark dispute between North and South Daoxiang Village has gradually cleared up.
