Commonly Used Paper Classifications for Printing
Commonly Used Classifications
1. Letterpress printing paper: referred to as letterpress paper, product packaging forms are divided into roll and offset printing . The basis weight of letterpress paper ranges from 50 grams to 80 grams per square meter. There are three types of product numbers: special number, number one, and number two. Special No. 1 letterpress paper is used for printing high-end books, and No. 2 letterpress paper is mainly used for printing general books, textbooks, and periodicals.
2. Newsprint: Also known as white newspaper, the packaging format is also divided into roll and flat. Newsprint has a ration of about 51 grams and is mainly used for printing newspapers and periodicals.
3. Offset printing paper: Offset paper for short. The basis weight is 60-180 grams. It is divided into double-sided offset paper and single-sided offset paper. Among them, double-sided offset paper 70-120 grams is the most widely used. There are three types of double-sided and single-sided offset paper grades: special number, No. 1, and No. 2. Special No. 1 double-sided offset paper is used for printing high-end color offset printing products; No. 2 double-sided offset paper is used for printing general color prints; single-sided offset paper is mainly used for printing posters and New Year pictures.
4. Coated paper: Coated paper is made by coating a layer of coating liquid on the base paper and then super-calendering it. The basis weight is 90-250 grams, and there are double-sided coated paper and single-sided coated paper. There are three types of product numbers: special number, number one, and number two. Special coated paper is used for printing delicate products with a network cable of 150 grams or more; No. 1 coated paper is used for printing products with a network cable of 120-150 grams; No. 2 coated paper can be used for printing products with a network cable of less than 120 grams. Coated paper is not resistant to folding, and once creases appear, it is extremely difficult to restore.
5. Book cover paper: The basis weight is 80-120 grams, mainly used for covers of books and periodicals. Book cover paper is available in a variety of colors to accommodate the needs of printing various covers.
6. Dictionary paper: It is divided into No. 1 and No. 2 paper, with a basis weight of 25-50 grams. It is mainly used for printing dictionaries and manuals. Dictionary paper is highly hygroscopic and will wrinkle when exposed to moisture.
7. Copy paper: Copy is the transliteration of English copy, which means copy. Copy paper is mainly used for printing multi-part orders and is suitable for copying and typing. Because the copy paper is translucent, in book printing, it is mainly used as a page protector for binding portrait pages.
8. Board paper: Paper with a basis weight of more than 250 grams per square meter is called board paper, or cardboard. There are many types of cardboard. The cardboard used in book printing is mainly used to make cover press cardboard for hardcover book shells, and envelope press cardboard for making hardcover books and picture album covers. The cardboard is all flat paper, and the thickness of the cover press cardboard is generally divided into three types: 1 (mm), 1.5 (mm), and 2 (mm). There are six thicknesses of envelope press cardboard: 1 (mm), 1.2 (mm), 1.4 (mm), 2 (mm), 2.5 (mm), and 3 (mm). Cardboard is also used to make paper packaging boxes.
Letterpress paper
Letterpress paper is the main paper used for letterpress printing of books and magazines. It is suitable for text paper of important works, scientific and technological books, academic journals, textbooks for colleges and technical secondary schools, etc. Letterpress paper can be divided into four grades: No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 according to the different composition ratios of paper materials. The number of the paper represents the quality of the paper. The larger the number, the worse the paper quality. Letterpress printing paper is mainly used for letterpress printing. This paper has properties similar to, but not identical to, newsprint.
Since the ratio of paper pulp and the tapping of pulp are better than newsprint, the fiber structure of letterpress paper is relatively uniform. At the same time, the gaps between fibers are filled with a certain amount of filler and glue, and have also been bleached, which forms This kind of paper has good adaptability to printing. It is slightly different from newsprint. Although its ink absorption is not as good as newsprint, it has the characteristics of uniform ink absorption; its water resistance and paper whiteness are both better than newsprint. Letterpress paper has the characteristics of uniform texture, lint-free, slightly elastic, opaque, slightly water-resistant and certain mechanical strength.
Weight: (49~60) ± 2g/m2
Flat paper specifications: 787×1092, 850×1168, 880×1230; there are also some special sizes of paper.
Roll paper specifications: width 787, 1092, 1575; length about 6000~8000m
Newsprint
Newsprint is also called white newspaper, which is used for newspapers, periodicals and books. Mainly used paper; suitable for main text paper such as newspapers, periodicals, textbooks, comic books, etc. The characteristics of newsprint are: the paper is light and has good elasticity; it has good ink absorption performance, which ensures that the ink can be firmly fixed on the paper; both sides of the paper are smooth and lint-free after calendering, thus making both sides The imprint is relatively clear and full; it has certain mechanical strength; it has good opacity; it is suitable for high-speed web printing.
This kind of paper is produced from mechanical wood pulp (or other chemical pulp) and contains a large amount of lignin and other impurities, so it is not suitable for long-term storage. If stored for too long, the paper will turn yellow and become brittle, with poor water resistance, making it unsuitable for writing. Newspaper ink or book ink must be used. The viscosity of the ink should not be too high. The moisture content of the page must be strictly controlled during offset printing.
Weight: (49~52) ± 2g/m2
Flat paper specifications: 787×1092, 850×1168, 880×1230
Roll paper Specifications: width 787, 1092, 1575: length about 6000~8000m
Offset paper
Offset paper is mainly used for offset (offset) printing machines or other printing machines to print higher-end color prints It is used in various applications, such as color pictorials, picture albums, promotional posters, color printed trademarks and some high-end book covers, illustrations, etc.
Offset paper is divided into three types: special size, No. 1 and No. 2 according to the pulp ratio. There are single-sided and double-sided, and there are two grades: super calendering and ordinary calendering.
Offset paper has small elasticity, uniform ink absorption, good smoothness, tight and opaque texture, good whiteness, and strong water resistance. Conjunctival offset printing ink and better quality lead printing ink should be used. The viscosity of the ink should not be too high, otherwise powder removal and fuzzing will occur. To prevent dirt from sticking to the back, anti-fouling agents, powder spraying or lining paper are generally used.

Roll paper specifications: width 787, 1092, 850:
Coated paper
Coated paper is also called coated paper. This kind of paper is It is made by coating a layer of white slurry on the base paper and calendering it. The surface of the paper is smooth, the whiteness is high, the paper fibers are evenly distributed, the thickness is consistent, the elasticity is small, the elasticity is good, the water resistance and tensile properties are strong, and the ink absorption and reception are very good. Coated paper is mainly used for printing albums, covers, postcards, exquisite product samples, and color trademarks. The pressure should not be too high when printing on coated paper, and offset resin-based inks and glossy inks should be used. To prevent dirt from sticking to the back, methods such as adding anti-fouling agents and powder spraying can be used. There are two types of coated paper: single-sided and double-sided.
