Shopee is an e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Founded in 2015, the parent company of Shopee platform is Southeast Asian Internet company Sea (formerly known as Garena). The company was founded in 2009 and received the lead investment from Malaysia’s Khazanah Nasional Bhd in 2016, followed by Tencent (Tencent led the Series A investment a few years ago). )’s US$170 million Series D financing.
In addition to its e-commerce business and its main gaming business, Sea also has a payment business - Airpay similar to Alibaba's Alipay and a social business Beetalk similar to Tencent's WeChat. From a business perspective, it is similar to the "Southeast Asian version" Tencent. Shopee covers 7 countries and regions, including Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, and has offices in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai.
With more than 4,500 cross-border employees in 6 Southeast Asian countries, mainland China and Taiwan, Shopee’s GMV in 2017 reached US$4.1 billion, a year-on-year increase of 258%.
