In 1969, Baoshan Breeding Pig Farm was established in Shuichang Township, Shidian County, Baoshan City. From 1970 to 1996, the focus was only on the utilization of Baoshan pigs, but no effective improvement in breeding was achieved. In addition, blind introduction and crossbreeding resulted in many performance stagnating or even deteriorating for many years. From 1997 to 2000, in order to fully utilize and tap the potential of local characteristic genetic resources and in accordance with the requirements for the construction of an improved breeding system, the former Provincial Planning Commission established a project to build and improve the Baoshan Breeding Pig Farm. By 2000, all counties and districts in Baoshan City had established county-level pig artificial insemination stations and some townships had established and consolidated pig artificial insemination outlets. A "three groups and one network" improved breeding system with Baoshan pigs as the female parent was initially formed. While building the system, in accordance with the requirements for the construction of the breeding system, the Baoshan breeding pig farm established a core group of Baoshan pigs, mainly Baoshan pigs, and started certain breeding work. While breeding, producing, and promoting applications, it has achieved initial progress. Since 2000, with the care and strong support of leading experts from relevant national, provincial and municipal departments, a series of group protection, scientific research and breeding, and rational development and utilization promotion work have been carried out for Baoshan pigs using the breeding pig farm in Baoshan City. It has successively cooperated with scientific research units and departments such as the Provincial Improvement Station and the Provincial Agricultural University to implement scientific research projects such as "Baosan Pig Excellent Maternal Line Selection and Utilization of Hybrid Advantages" and "Baosan Pig New Line Optimization Breeding and Sustainable Utilization Key Technology Research" to expand It has improved the quality of Baoshan pigs and stabilized the herds. Expert groups organized by the province and state visited Baoshan for detailed investigations many times and were identified as rare breeding livestock resources unique to Yunnan Province.

In 2009, it was listed as a provincial livestock and poultry genetic resource protected variety in Yunnan Province. In 2011, the Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture carried out the selection and recognition activities of "Yunnan's Six Famous Pigs, Six Famous Cattle, Six Famous Sheep, Six Famous Chickens, and Six Famous Fishes". Through various selections, Baoshan pig was shortlisted as one of the six famous pigs in Yunnan.

The Baoshan pig breeding area is Longyang District, Shidian County, Tengchong County, Longling County and Changning County within the administrative division of Baoshan City, Yunnan Province (district ).
