JD Logistics: Carry out Qingliu Plan to the end

On August 6, one of the pilot projects of "Rethinking Plastics - Circular Economy to Respond to Marine Debris" supported by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development "Plastic Packaging Reduction and Recycling in the Express Industry" "The online kick-off meeting was officially held. JD Logistics participated in this project and piloted more than 10,000 recyclable packaging boxes in Haikou. It also piloted recyclable express bags for the first time to explore and gradually reduce the use of disposable PE plastic packaging bags.

On November 15 last year, JD Logistics announced its carbon target: compared with 2019, total carbon emissions will be reduced by 50% by 2030. As early as 2017, JD Logistics joined hands with P&G, Nestlé, Wyeth, Lego, Kimberly-Clark, Nongfu Spring, Unilever, Watsons, Yili and other merchants to jointly launch the Qingliu Plan to promote the "end-to-end" green supply chain and environmental protection, and explore the realization of low-carbon environmental protection, energy saving and consumption reduction in packaging, warehousing, transportation and other aspects.

The recent launch of recyclable express bags in Haikou is not JD Logistics’ first attempt at recyclable packaging. In December 2017, JD Logistics launched its first pilot recycling express box - Qingliu Box. Duan Yanjian introduced that the Qingliu box is made of reusable materials. Under normal circumstances, the box can be recycled more than 50 times, and it can be recycled and regenerated after damage. At the same time, Qingliu boxes do not require tape sealing and can be recycled without generating any disposable packaging waste. In conjunction with the self-developed recycling packaging management system, the Qingliu box uses unique codes and RFID management technology to achieve full-process monitoring of recycling packaging. Currently, Qingliu boxes are in regular use in more than 30 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Shenyang, and Wuhan, and have been used more than 16 million times.

In addition, in JD.com’s fresh food business, the use of foldable insulated turnover boxes has been fully implemented to replace disposable foam boxes and returned to the warehouse for recycling through JD.com’s reverse logistics. Jingdong's recycling cold chain boxes have a service life of more than 1.5 years. The average number of uses per box is 130 times, and the cumulative number of uses over the years has reached 180 million times, effectively reducing the use of disposable foam boxes, ice bags, and dry ice. At present, a total of 180 million disposable foam boxes, 600 million disposable ice bags, and 50 million kilograms of dry ice have been reduced, with a cumulative emission reduction of more than 300,000 tons.

According to reports, JD Logistics also leverages its advantages in the supply chain and cooperates with upstream companies to work together on the packaging reduction cycle. On the one hand, the original packaging is used, that is, the product packaging has the function of protecting the product during logistics and transportation, and meets the external logistics environment, and can be shipped directly without secondary packaging. JD Logistics encourages upstream brand companies to implement direct shipping packaging through preferential warehousing policies. Thousands of product SKUs from brands such as Procter & Gamble and Unilever can be shipped directly in their original factory packaging. So far, it has reduced the use of logistics cartons by more than 150 million. . Duan Yanjian pointed out that this measure has reduced the use of paper by approximately 125,000 tons, which is equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by 4.4105 tons.

On the other hand, using simple packaging, that is, by simplifying or removing the logo of the brand carton, can improve the reuse rate of merchant cartons in downstream logistics companies and reduce the use of disposable packaging in the supply chain. At present, more than 50 companies, including Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, and L'Oréal, have promoted simple packaging, reducing the use of disposable cartons by more than 100 million.

Data provided by JD Logistics shows: As of December 31, 2020, the average usage rate of JD recycling transfer bags has exceeded 98; by "slimming" the width of the tape from 53mm to 45mm, in 2020 In 2020, Jingdong's tape slimming campaign reduced the use of tape by 400 million meters; through paperless operations in the warehouse and electronic receipts, paper consumption was reduced by 13,000 tons in 2020.

In 2016, JD.com and Donggang Co., Ltd. jointly established the "JD Packaging Laboratory", dedicated to the development and use of green logistics packaging products. The laboratory is the first domestic experimental research and development institution based on the field of e-commerce logistics packaging.

In April 2018, the packaging laboratory was upgraded to the "E-commerce Logistics Joint Packaging Innovation Center". JD Logistics and upstream and downstream partners in industries such as Grayscale Environmental Protection jointly developed green packaging application technology from the perspective of consumer demand and supply chain innovation. Come in and explore the green packaging ecology.

By August 2019, JD Logistics had signed cooperation with many institutions and companies such as China Packaging Research and Testing Center, Procter & Gamble China, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft Heinz, Unilever, Mengniu, and Amcor to launch The China E-commerce Logistics Industry Packaging Standards Alliance was established to jointly discuss the formulation, application and promotion of packaging standards for the e-commerce industry. This standard is based on the full-link transportation environment of JD Logistics. It records in detail the logistics data of tens of thousands of nodes in intra-city, cross-city, cross-region transportation, land transportation, aviation, railway and other scenarios. It studies the factors of cargo damage and forms packaging test standards. It is understood that the first phase of the standard has been completed and can provide important basis for enterprises upstream and downstream of the supply chain, including providing a real simulation environment for e-commerce logistics for brand owners’ source packaging design, reducing the error rate of packaging laboratory testing; It provides a basis for enterprises to formulate commodity packaging standards; it provides a basis for logistics enterprises to provide value-added packaging services to avoid damage to goods caused by insufficient packaging; it provides a reference for packaging enterprises to provide transportation packaging solutions to meet market demand.

In terms of the development of black technology, JD Logistics has always been in the first echelon in the country, and there have been many breakthroughs in black technology in green packaging in recent years. At the beginning of 2019, JD Logistics launched a full-link intelligent packaging system - "Jingwei", which mainly includes 18 kinds of intelligent equipment such as magnetic levitation balers, bubble film balers, pillow balers, folding film balers, etc., to achieve the goal of bubble film packaging. The overall planning and rational use of various packaging materials such as folding film, cartons, etc. form a solution for the intelligent packaging system integrating software and hardware. According to reports, the accuracy of consumable recommendation through "Jingwei Recommendation" is above 96.5, which has significantly reduced the cost and increased efficiency of packaging materials.

In the logistics process, the carbon emissions generated by trucks have always been the largest source of carbon emissions for logistics companies. However, due to current issues such as battery life and imperfect charging piles, the popularity of new energy vehicles across the region has not yet been achieved. Despite this, JD Logistics is actively promoting the application of new energy vehicles within its capabilities.

In terms of warehousing facilities, JD Logistics vigorously promotes photovoltaic power generation. As early as 2017, JD Logistics took the lead in deploying a rooftop distributed photovoltaic power generation system in Shanghai's "Asia No. 1" smart logistics park, and officially connected it to the grid in 2018. At present, photovoltaic power generation has covered the power needs of multiple scene operations in the park, including warehouse lighting, automatic sorting, automatic packaging, automatic picking, etc. At the same time, it has taken the lead in integrating distributed photovoltaic power stations and automotive industry resources, exploring "car sheds" The pilot project of "Charging Pile Photovoltaic" has created a new model for the widespread promotion and application of photovoltaic power generation in the logistics field.

"JD Logistics' Asia No. 1 smart logistics parks in Qingdao, Hefei, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Tianjin, and Beijing have also successively completed photovoltaic power generation and grid connection. By the end of 2021, the total installed capacity of photovoltaic power plants will reach 200 megawatts, achieving an annual power generation of more than 160 million kilowatt-hours." Duan Yanjian provided such a set of data: This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 50,000 households. According to calculations, the photovoltaic power generation of "Asia One" can reduce carbon emissions by an average of 40 kilograms per minute. Smart equipment saves 2,283 degrees of electricity through "black light operation", and the rainwater collection system irrigates 120 square meters of green space.

"In the future, JD Logistics will continue to rely on the 'Qingliu Plan', adhere to the concept of green and sustainable development, and take the initiative to assume social responsibilities."
