Peugeot models are named in x0y format. X represents the size (that is, the grade) of the car, and Y represents the model (the larger the number, the newer the model). So a Peugeot 406 is definitely newer than a Peugeot 305. There are exceptions to this general rule. For example, Peugeot 309(SIMCA model) is older than 306. Other exceptions are due to improved models, such as the 206sw, which is basically the same size as the 4-series car.

Peugeot plans to use four digits with two zeros in the middle to name new products in the future. This method has been tried on the concept car 4002. Peugeot 1007 launched in 2005 formally adopted this system.
