The island is mountainous, with mountains and hills accounting for 2/3 of the total island area. It is distributed in the east and the middle. From east to west, there are five parallel mountains: Taitung, Central, Yushan, Xueshan and Alishan, which are NNE-South-South-West, with the central mountain as the main watershed. Among them, the mountains above 1 meters above sea level account for about half of all mountains, and there are more than 3 peaks above 35 meters above sea level. Yushan, the highest peak, is 3997 meters above sea level, which is the first peak in the southeast of China. The hills are mostly around the foothills of five mountains, mainly Keelung and Zhunan hills in the north, Fengyuan and Chiayi hills in the middle and Hengchun hills in the south, with an altitude of about 6 meters. There are Datun Volcanoes in the north, which are mostly below 1 meters above sea level, which is an important barrier in the north.
