"Famous" means very famous, almost a household name, with great influence and has stood the test of time. And "well-known" means that fame and influence are not big enough, but only to the extent that they begin to have influence. Modern Chinese dictionaries are so vague that it is difficult to distinguish two words. I teach Chinese, which is my own understanding. I don't know if I can be satisfied.
