The acquisition of trademark rights in Greece is based on the principle of registration. Greece implements the "International Classification of Goods and Services for Trademark Registration". The types of trademarks that can be registered include commodity trademarks, service marks and collective trademarks.

Greece is a member state of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the World Intellectual Property Organization. The transitional decree stipulates that the priority of a service mark shall be determined five years after the first use of the service mark after the implementation of the new decree. The new opposition period will apply to applications filed after the new Act comes into force on November 1, 1994. The old decree will apply to applications received before November 1, 1994.

Greek Trademark Law says that a trademark can consist of words, names, illustrations, designs, letters, numbers, sounds, product shapes and their packaging.
