Ningxia has cultivated wolfberry for more than 500 years, and Zhongning wolfberry is the top grade of Ningxia wolfberry. The reason why Zhongning wolfberry is famous in the world is, firstly, due to the local soil suitable for the growth of wolfberry and the climate with large temperature difference between day and night; secondly, it uses mixed irrigation with water from the Yellow River and bitter water from the Qingshui River containing various minerals. The "Zhongwei County Chronicle" compiled during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty stated: "Family planting wolfberry gardens in Ning'an area (now Zhongning County, Ningxia), and sweet wolfberry is used as medicine in all provinces." People at that time once wrote a poem praising: "The trees in the Qi Garden are red in June, and Ning'an medicine and fruit are good in the world. A thousand coins and a dou are worth the price, and the harvest field will be rich early."
