AZT

An anti-AIDS drug produced by the pharmaceutical company Glaxo Wellcome

It is reported to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It is also called Zidovudine and its brand name is Retrovir.

HIV reproduces by reverse transcription, and AZT is a reverse transcriptase inhibitor because the molecular structure of AZT is very similar to that of thymidine deoxynucleotide. It is a positive control drug for evaluating other anti-HIV drugs and a benchmark drug for combined treatment of HIV-infected and AIDS patients. Therefore, AZT is listed as the first antiviral drug recommended in the third edition of the "National New Drug Development Guidelines". AZT has a very high inhibitory effect on HIV. It is used alone in the initial stage of treatment of AIDS and then used in combination with other drugs. It is the most cost-effective among all anti-AIDS drugs. The current annual world demand is 100 tons. With the sharp increase in AIDS patients, the world's annual demand will gradually increase to 200 tons. Currently, 80% of the market share of 100 tons of AZT on the market is occupied by Glaxo Company.
